GAUTAM SAYS FREEDOM FROM ILLITERACY ‘RIGHTS TO EDUCATION’

Kathmandu, – Freedom from illiteracy was a “rights to education” that should not be the subject of speculation, Mr. Rajendra Gautam, Founder and President of Solidarity Nepal said on Friday.

In a letter read at celebrations to mark International Campaign on Education called “Mission Literacy” at the Solidarity House in Kathmandu, Gautam called for greater humanity and concrete commitments to help developing countries like Nepal.

Mr. Gautam said “compromises or negotiations” would achieve nothing if justice and solidarity were forgotten and stressed that people were dying of illiteracy, health issues and hunger in Asia.

The three Youth agencies, the Nepal Youth Voluntary Club, YAN and YOPD celebrated the day with talks at the SN headquarters in Kathmandu.

This year’s theme was “End Illiteracy Now – Help Solidarity Change the WORLD” to work in the education sector and to achieve the mission of SN worldwide.

“If we are too serious about the future of our children, more effort has to be made to address the problem of Illiteracy,” said LP Subedi, Governor of Nepal Youth Voluntary Club.

At the closing session, President Mr. Gautam gave away the certificates of Appreciation to the partner organization of SN.

Condition of Disabled and Helpless Children in Nepal

WHO and other different surveys indicate that 5% children are victimized by any kinds of disabilities in Nepal every year. Nearly 54% children fall prey to disability due to the lack of knowledge in their parents about the nature and treatment of different common curable communicable diseases.

Likewise, nearly 17% children are disabled due to different accidents. Nearly 29% children are disabled by birth. The mortality rate of children is extremely high because only 17% children get proper health facilities, medicines, nutrition whereas 70% to 80% are deprived of their fundamental right ; the right to an education.

Education is critical to a child’s development and well being. Each child, though disabled has the right to an education, which has become most widely accepted human right. Poverty, blind faiths or dead habits, which still exist in the society, prevent them from getting an access to education.

Education has become inaccessible to the disabled due to the lack of proper physical structure of school surrounding, roads and transportation. Difficulties faced by the disabled in transportation vary from those living in the Terai to those living in the Hilly region. But difficulties faced by them are similar too some extent inside the school due to similar structure of school.

They inevitably have to face difficulties in all places either in urban areas or in rural areas. Each disabled child is deprived of his/her fundamental rights. The disabled are discriminated on the ground of their disabilities and are considered as a burden, just like a milestone around the neck, in the family and the society.

They are deprived of essential medicines, proper health care, nutrition or security. As a result, the mortality rate is profoundly higher. They are deprived of the rights-the right to participate in social activities, the right to an education, the right to be equally treated. They will also feel obliged to bear the duties and responsibilities for their families, society and country on the condition that they get equal opportunities for education and skills development.

It is the common duty and responsibilities of their parents, society and country not only to protect from domestic violence, abuse, exploitation and discrimination but also to provide them with preventive and curative health care, adequate nutrition, safe learning and playing environment with a view to enabling them to reach their potentials.

The largest single project ever undertaken by us is the dream to build a new government recognized school under Education Project called “Mission Literacy” to give our children a far better education and ultimately a much better future. So, let’s unite Together For Change.

Project : Mission Literacy

Investing in education is the single most effective means of reducing poverty.

Education is a key need, along with other basics, in today’s world for anyone, anywhere to have a good quality of life. In developing countries like Nepal, basic education is crucial to alleviating poverty, reducing inequality and driving economic growth.

Quality of education in Nepal is generally poor, characterized by high drop-out rates, lack of child- and girl-friendly facilities and child-centered learning environments. Nepal is home to 26.6 million people, with children younger than 15 years old making up more than 40% of the population. More than one in three people in Nepal live in extreme poverty, subsisting on less than $1 per day.

Why Mission Literacy?

Education is one of the most important investments a country can make in its people, its future and is critical to reducing poverty and inequality. Education plays a decisive role in a child’s development. Mission Literacy campaign helps to improve participation of children, their parents and the community in education planning, improve learning levels and reduce dropout rates of children.

Project “Mission Literacy”:

“Mission Literacy” is an international level program, which focuses on the basic education for underprivileged children, youths and adults in rural areas of Nepal. It has a goal to benefit more than 1 million people through learning process as it is highly recognized, participated and supported by Medias, colleges, corporate houses, youth agencies, government, political figures, NGOs, local organizations and local people. This program is initiated by Solidarity Nepal, a non-profitable and social welfare organization dedicated for social transformation in Nepal, open to all persons regardless of race, color, creed, gender or political preference.

“Mission Literacy” means to eradicate illiteracy in the country by imparting functional literacy to non-literates. Through the success of our pilot phase program conducted at several schools, orphan houses and community centers. Solidarity Nepal is confident to meet the challenge through educational scholarship, awareness, orientation & training program, school to school movement and home to home campaign. Besides, this project also supports the Technical Education and IT infrastructure (e-library classes) that can be given to the students and teachers of different schools in the remote districts of Nepal.

Mission Literacy initiative includes:

  • Fundamental “0-3 yrs”
  • Pre-school “3-6 yrs”
  • Non Formal Education “6-14 yrs” (Non-School Going)
  • Remedial Education “6-14 yrs” (School Going)
  • Bridge Course “14-18 yrs” (Drop-Outs)
  • Functional Literacy “18-45 yrs”
  • Women and Family Life Education for adolescent girls.

The project will:

  • Create quality, inclusive, learner-friendly environment for all the children, youths and adults through educational scholarship, interaction programs, awareness and additional facilities.
  • Develop equitable education policies and practices, thereby ensuring a quality education for all regardless of their gender, class, caste, ethnicity and religion.
  • Focus on early childhood development, non-formal, technical & vocational education, and promotion of child-centered approaches, train teachers and helping communities to develop close linkages with schools.
  • Support under-privileged children under difficult circumstances such as child labor, poor economic condition, children inflicted and affected with HIV/AIDS, street and runaway children, children with rare disability, disaster struck children and slum children.
  • Improve quality of education through learning habits and awareness campaign.
  • Encourage transparency, good governance, stability and helps to fight against graft and corruption.
  • Increase the school enrollment rate.

How This Campaign Runs?
Mission Literacy campaign runs with your generous support. Solidarity Nepal initiated this campaign for everyone who is passionate about making difference in Nepal by investing little effort. Every one of you can contribute and participate in this campaign by raising fund, volunteer opportunities and promoting us so we can get to our potential supporters.

How to support?

  • Educational scholarship for the underprivileged children, youths and adults in the rural areas of Nepal.
